man, that's interesting...
as i understand it, during break in you want to a) make the ring conform to the bore shape, and b) knock off the ridges of the hone pattern.
there are different hone patterns used for different apps, like deep scoring marks for endurance (more oil on rings) or shallow with a lot of flat between scores for power (to reduce friction)
some ppl say to use a 120grit finish then run in slowly, some say to use 120 then 600, then do a light finish with 1200 to remove the tops of the ridges...
all i can say is i'd like to find out from a few circuit, rally and endurance racers to see what they use...
i also think that the bore and ring material will make a big difference, due to the different hardnesses etc...
oh, and that i followed 'textbook run-in' and have a lot of blowby.. or was that the 20 months of high rpm? hmmmmm
i might give this method a go next time....(and who can resist anyways )
