Appolo, on my ST184 5SFE i replaced the air filter with somethihng from super cheap about 3 months ago. Are you saying that i can get a K&N filter that just goes in the stock air box, or is it a new air box that you get? Would it make any difference to performance or induction sound or anything, or would it only be worth doing if my old filter was really really dirty and worn.

I got one to fit the factory airbox. Supercheap should be able to order one for you.
I can notice induction sound over the old paper filter. (Maybe because I was used to hearing it when I had my old corolla and know what to listen for). It's not a faint noise, but not exaggerated either. Sort of inbetween when you have the throttle on. I'd say it's just "nice" when you are say, giving it a little when going up a hill. Plus I get the "breath out" noise when I turn the engine off. 
As for performance, It will be flowing more air as it's a superior design to the paper filter, and being a flat panel, flows more direct air than a POD does at any rate. But due to my 5sfe engine management, there is no actual increased performance. If there was, only a real dyno would show it. My butt dyno notices no difference.
For me, the major draw was the fact I don't have to replace it every 20,000km's, and it came with a cool sticker I put on the top of the airbox.
