Pretty much what Cambelt said.
My old 2M used to run 220 psi dynamic compression COLD. It ran 8853 high top pistons and a 41012 round chamber head. It had a measured compression ratio of around 10.5:1. When I initially ran it in my MS45 with a single Aisan 2 barrel carby, 3 speed overdrive and 3.9:1 diff, I could achieve around 10l/100km on the highway. Of course, the triple SUs wrecked this around town, but with a steady foot I could still get near this on the highway.
The 4MU and 5ME motors all have low compression (8 - 8.5:1), are burdened with emissions controls, run unsophisticated analogue EFI management (not even an O2 sensor here in Australia) and lug around heavy shells.
I think it would be stretching the truth to say the old M are are better than the new JZ series motors in the fuel efficieny stakes, but a good condition well tuned 2M would certainly have given it a scare.
