Thu, 18 September 2003 13:41 The group B cars weren't entirely lacking in safety, they were however - dangerous by design. The biggest problem was the proximity of the turbo to the fuel tank, and the fact that lots of fuel tanks were almost directly underneath the driver. Exploding cars was a very big issue, and the frightening speed which they could attain out on the stages was also quite deadly. Rallying has always been a deadly sport though, and I'm not convinced that Group B made it much more dangerous than it was (no doubt it was more dangerous though). Ari Vatanen had three MASSIVE accidents in a row in a Group B peugeot and he's still alive to talk about it. Just in the past year - even with modern safe rallying - we've had co-drivers retire from injuries (Mannisenmaki for example) and two top british drivers (names have slipped my mind atm) die in America and so it goes on.
