yes, you can do it the dodgy way like that, but chances are that if you have to replace the valve stems seals, then some of the valve guides have gone too
i had the VSS's replaced when i bought my 6M (40k kms ago), and i just did them again (guides mainly this time) a few months ago

had the guides been done when i bought the motor, i would not have to have spent the $500 to do them this time around

i strongly suggest doing the head properly
taking it off, completely stripping it, and rebuild

btw, we actually think it was the oil pump pulley seal that was leaking, not the crank pulley seal
