I've had similar problems with a later model carby and it turned out to be an earthing problem that was causing the fuel cutout solenoid to shut off. I tightened up all the earthing leads I could find and in my case the problem was two earthing wires coming out from the loom at the back of the motor below the carby and attaching to the inlet manifold. Mine is a 4AFC engine but I think the carbies are similar. I also found the temperature gauge kept fluctuating from normal to hot - solved at the same time as I tightened the earthing wires.
Hope this helps, Cheers.
