The springs stop the filter from getting sucked into the trumpet. How do I know, ran my cousins Micra and got beaten because my car would not rev past 5500 rpm as one of the filters had collapsed into the trumpet. I now have springs in each filter. 
He remains unbeaten as his sister wrote it off, and we never had a rematch.
