I had a similar incident and the copper explained to me that it is a regular occurrence for someone to back into a pole...then drive around looking for someone with damage on their car and report it as a hit/run... he said one guy even backed into the pole intentionally and reported the number plate of someone he knew for revenge. I think generally the police (in the ACT anyway) are pretty good, considering the sort of shit they deal with day to day. However, I have had a separate (assault) charge that I felt was being unfairly treated, it took them 3 weeks to even take a complaint!! It was amazing how quickly it was processed once I wrote a polite letter to the Attorney General - making it very clear that the letter was also being sent to the shadow attorney general. [EDIT] As always be careful how you word any such document - only state facts, or if you sate an opinions make it clear that they are your opinions...anything else will not help your cause!
