I don't use the google toolbar as it leaves your browser open to third party browser extenstions, (which you need enabled for it to work), and I don't trust leaving that enabled. Any old thing can then hook onto IE.
For popups, I have my own custom hosts file that I'm constantly adding to. The popup still happens, but it's empty.
As for banner ads, Agnitum outpost pro is taking care of those for me. 99% of ads are taken care of. For most of them it puts a [AD] and a link to the ad in place of the graphic the ad would normally use, so it's still clickable, just not an annoying animation in your window.
