When spray painting, the final finish has a lot to do with the preparation. before sanding the primer coat, you need to apply a guide coat, an aerosol can of black acrylic will do. Dry sand with 800 to 1000 grit paper, any finer, and the paint will simply not key into the undercoat, and will result in a poor job. The guide coat will all rub off on the level surfaces and high spots(these will show first), but will still be visible in any low spots, which will need to be filled (microfine filler) or repainted with primer to build up the low spots. If you are after a show winning finish, you may have to re-prime and rub down a couple of times. Time and effort spent now will really reward you in the long run!
regards Chuck.
ps. I'm not a pro, but have painted dozens of cars.
