I had the exact same problem when I put my 18RG in.. The signal was too weak or fine or something for the tacho.

VDO were able to fit new internals into my original tacho. This fixed the problem and needle was smooth as all the way to 8000rpm + Smile

Companys make black boxes that alter the signal for old tachos but i've never had a lot of luck with these.

$120 to VDO and problem solved.
