First of all, go to www.howstuffworks.com and read up on differentials. This will give you a basic idea of what a diff is and how it works.
1. Look at pictures of a diff, you'll see what it is straight away. Torque is transferred from the driveshaft to the axles by the crownwheel and pinion. The crownwheel (aka ring gear) is the big gear which goes all the way around the diff. The diameter of the crownwheel is an important factor when determining the load rating of a diff; the bigger it is, the more torque it can handle.
2. The gear ratio is determined by the number of teeth in the pinion compared to the number of teeth in the crownwheel, expressed as a ratio. For example, if 4.1 turns of the pinion results in one turn of the crownwheel, that's a 4.1:1 ratio. A higher ratio (eg 3.5:1) gives you a higher top speed and fewer engine revs on the highway, but you sacrifice acceleration. A lower ratio (eg 4.8:1) will give you zippy acceleration off the line but the engine will rev to buggery on the highway and you'll have a much lower top speed.
3. Once again, look at pictures of a diff and you'll see the small gears in the centre of the diff which provide the differential action. The gears which transfer drive between the axles are sometimes called pinion gears. Most diffs have two pinion gears, but some have four which makes the assembly more rigid and therefore stronger.
4. If you're after a G series diff, any Hilux or Hiace will have one. If you want a specific ratio and/or an LSD centre, you'll have to look for a specific model.
5. The cheapest way to get a G series LSD is to get one out of a Hilux with a factory LSD. You'll mostly find them in later-model stuff (eg most grey-import Hilux Surf's seem to have LSD's). I've seen them go for as little as $400.
6. The crownwheel and pinion comes as a set, but yes you can swap a crownwheel and pinion on to a different centre. People often do this if they buy an LSD and it comes with the wrong ratio; you can pull the crownwheel and pinion off another diff and put it on your LSD centre.
7. Can't help you there.
I agree with Cool1's comments though, a G series diff is big and heavy and not necessary for the power you have. I'd investigate something smaller like an F series.
