After looking at various places, there is one guy selling a new pump (255 l/hr Walbro pump) on ebay for USD $115 incl shipping.
How then does it get to be AUS $100 more here from a local supplier ?

ebay suppliers are often tax dodging too 
US$115 =~ AUD$177 (@.65)
customs is 15% for auto parts = AUD$26.50
shipping for airmail i would guess is around US$30-60 (i just got some 1lb packages that cost US$25) if we guess US$50 = UAD$77
so 177+26+77 = AUD$280
and then we have GST on top an ALL the above costs = $28
so we have a grand total of AUD$308
since the customs +GST is >$50, you have to pay it 
if you manage to miss the customs and GST, then usually just double the US cost.... if you get customs (usually for auto parts ) then it's more like 2.5x the US cost...
