Yep, wheels must turn in the same direction for an LSD. An open centre diff can also do this if the Spider Gears have seized, but I have only ever seen this happen in Borg Warner diffs that haven't been moved in years. You can also take the oil fill plug out of the diff and look into it, but you must first know what you are looking for!
Code for LSD in Toyota diffs are T313 or T315, where:
T is the style or series of diff
31 is the ratio (this number will change dependant on the ratio)
3 is a 2 pinion LSD
5 is a 4 pinion LSD
Open centre diffs have 2 and 4 final numbers, and noone ever makes a note of retrofitted LSD's so keep an eye out for them!
