What is wrong with the alternator? I'm pretty sure you can get rebuild kits (new bearings / brushes) if the stator / rotor windings are still good. Then it will be totally reconditioned, better than a secondhand one that your not 100% sure of the condition....
Also bear in mind if you do go looking for a new alternator off something else that some alternators have an internal regulator and some have an external regulator!
