Have had this happen with a mates 7m-gte, although I think it made a click sound. Bascially, after giving the starter motor a good tap whilst trying to crank it it eventually started. I think sometimes the starter or solenoid gets a bit dodgy.
My 1jz does this from time to time as well - drive it for a while, turn it off, try to start it again and it doesn't do anything. Switch it off and on a couple of times (sometimes a lot more) and it will start OK. On other days it will be fine.
