It sits there quietly growing while you forget about it and then turns into major problems. There is almost always more rust in a car than you know about. Honestly, I'm pretty surprised that a car that age would have rust in it. I think you should consider why a particular area has rust. If its just a battery spill tray then you know its been caused by the battery and that you can just replace it. If its in a structural component then replacing it won't be so easy. Also - why is it there? Has the car been in an accident? If the rust is in a non-structural, easily replaceable area (ONLY), then it shouldn't be expensive to fix. If it doesn't fall into that category then fixing it properly will most likely be expensive. Too much rust, or rust in structural members can make regitering a car very difficult. It also affects resale value. As I see it you have a couple of options: Option 1 - find another car that doesn't have rust Option 2 - see if you can take it to a repairer to get a firm quote to fix & factor this cost into your offer price Option 3 - run the risk of the rust being much worse than you know about but compensate for this by offering a low price.
