Yeah, the laugh factor got me reading too, was gonna say "install it and take it back when you find out it's stuffed!"
Seriously, while the trans is still on the ground put it in every gear and rotate the input shaft, while holding the output shaft. The movement should be smooth and knock free. Drop the oil if it has not been done, and look at the amount of metal filings on any magnet attached to the sump bung, don't worry about seeing a small amount, all boxes wear, especially one that 30 years old (ie boxes from TA22's!). you don't want to see anything bigger than dust. Run the shifter thrpought the gear changes to ensure it changes cleanly, and look for oil leaks especially between the bellhousing and box on a T50.
As for selection, I'd stay with the TA22 style T50, they have forward mount shifters, and this will enable you to keep the factory console. Sprinter boxes have rear mount shifters, and also 22 spline output shafts, necessitating a tailshaft change to use. T18 boxes also have the rear mount shifter, while utilising the 20 spline output shaft like your TA22 has.
