GIN51E wrote on Thu, 25 July 2002 7:42 AM | why dont you just spend $150 of a full setup for a HF CB and have it all installed in your car they might not be as clear as a UHF but they still work very well if they are set up correct.

What in the heck is a HF CB? I was aware of UHF & AM units, but have never heard of HF.. Sounds like a pretty cheap price for a car-mounted unit..
|
well you have HF and UHF cb's just like you have VHF as well VHF stands for (Very High Frequency) UHF stands for (Ultra High Frequency) and HF stands for (High Frequency) VHF runs on around 100 something MHZ UHF runs on 400 something MHZ where HF runs on 27Mhz a general rule is the higher the frequency the clearer the sound HF you get a fair bit of distortion and don't have the distance to a UHF yet an in car HF CB has the same range if not a bit more then a hand help UHF CB but because your not getting the sound quality and so forth thats why they are much cheaper, but they still do the job if you just want to talk to mates in other cars while driving some place, A good Uniden in car HF CB so called (AM CB) yet they run the the HF band is $119 from Dicksmith, u then buy an aerial mount $9 the antenna coax cable $22.60 then the Antenna $18.95
All easy to install yourself no problems at all then if you want to make sure you get the best possible sound and distance you get it SWR'ed in which is where they connect a SWR meter in between the antenna and the unit and tune the antenna (by cutting off little bits of the top) till its exact and getting the best performance, lots of people think CB's are shit as they go out buy all the stuff then install it and find they don't have much distance and so forth where if you go to some car audio places where they also do CB installation even a 4wd shop they can SWR it in for you for about $10 and it makes a big difference.
much cheaper and better if its only for that weekend cruse with mates compared to getting an in car UHF CB which you will be looking at about $250 for just the unit.
main reason UHF is clearer then HF is UHF uses FM while HF uses AM thats why you get a bit of distortion through the HF radio's
plus you don't have to worry about having a hand help UHF CB charged all the time as this unit just runs of the cars 12V
