as far as the legalities go, here is what an engineer told me when i recently enquired,
-battery must be in a sealed box with a vent to the outside of car.
-battery bracket must be bolted to the car body, (no tek screws!)
-under the battery box a tray must be installed and a drain to the outside (i guess to stop acid spills).
-it doesn't matter if you're battery is a gel cell or whatever, because the rta doesnt care, (i dont have kids but i have to have child restraints).
in short i found it to be a PITA so put a smaller battery back in the factory location, which in you're case wont help much, however if you can get a different shape of battery, or possibly get away with a smaller one, that allowed you IC pipes to fit that would be the easiest route.
matty.
