Glen, both motors can be good, it just depends what you do to them, in stock form I would say that the 18rg would be my choice, but then I've only been behind an auto 12a.
Rebuilding an 18rg isn't cheap, ours cost about $2700 to rebuild, but then the engine was a $250 incomplete unknown quantity.
If you can get away with not having to replace all the chain dampers you'll save yourself a few hundred and also a lot of grief. As far as I know, we got the last top damper, and that had to come from a 3tgte, that will tell you how rare some of these part can be.
Pistons are a real bugger to find if you want to replace these, we did.
JP engineering can make them up for you $660/set, they are near my house so if you want more info on that, give me a PM.
