I originally ran my 20V AE86 with a VL external fuel pump and no surge tank. When the tank got to about 1/4 the engine would starve of fuel when going around corners. I have since installed a low pressure fuel pump (Carter) which feeds the surge tank (around 800ml capacity) - the VL fuel pumps draws directly from this. I now have no problems whatsoever with fuel starvation and the VL fuel pump is now a hell of alot quieter. It's a worry considering the so called mechanic who did the conversion claimed that it didn't need a surge tank
