To what I know - Jonny has it right here.
OEM engine configuration will produce far stronger vacuum levels than twin setup of tuning carburetors do. This is due to fact that in OEM setup we have 4 cylinders sucking up the vacuum. With twincarbs we take vacuum outlet from only one cylinder bore - hence giving us weaker vacuum levels. (note - especially evident in engines with long duration cams).

This leads us in a situation of of vacuum pod on the side of dizzy not getting appropriate vacuum levels to operate properly. Depending on application it may work partially, but hardly ever as well as originally.
We could of course compensate lack of vacuum level with a more sensitive vacuum pod, to make vacuum advance work again. Trouble is to find such vacuum pod unit.
In competition use engines hardly ever get to see miniscule/partial throttle openings, hence removing vacuum advance system will not have any negative downside to it.

Just off top of my head. If one could carefully open up OEM vacuum pod, remove the spring inside, have it cut a touch shorter, and assemble unit back to airtight condition - we would be on our way to restore vacuum advance function with twin carbs.

I dunno about performancewise, but definately vacuum assisted ignition advance will have a positive impact on cruising fuel economy.
