Back in the 60's/70's, most Japanese cars ran a 75-85 gear oil in the boxes, but way back when they were introduced, this stuff wasn't available off the shelf(in Aust), as it is now. When you put the typical 90 grade in a Japanese box, they got awfully tired of trying to shift that thick soup around, and all sorts of problems developed! The Fix, fill the box with ATF, the reasoning being that it had similar wiping properties to 90 grade, but was nowhere as thick!
regards Chuck.
