I know that the same types you can upspec (dextron 1 to 2 or 3 etc) is GM. Type F is ford (early) late is Mercon, if mercon isn't available use dex 2. Chrysley specs Mopar and dex 2 is a substitute but mopar can't be sub'd for mercon (go figure). Toyota often specs type T (in later models) without substitution).
Amsoil make a "universal" ATF, but you will pay dearly for it like all their stuff. But it matches the following,
GM; Dexron II, Dexron III, GM 6297M, GM 6417M
Ford; Mercon, Mercon V, M2C 163-A2, M2C 202B
Chrysler; ATF+ thru ATF+4, MS 7176E, MS 9602D
Allison; C-3, C-4, Caterpillar; TO-2, TO-3, Voith Commercial, Opel and GM Strasbourg
Power Steering Recommending ATF, Multiple Industrial Hydraulics
AMSOIL ATF can also replace any of the following manufacturer brand name fluids:
AGCO/Deutz-Allis/White; Power Fluid 411
Nissan, Hyundai, Mitsubishi Diamond SP, Porshe
AND will interchange with Toyota Type T and T IV (4)
But it's $7-80 US per quart, not cheap.
Toyota's fluid seems to be one of the Highly Friction Modified fluids, which there is an additive for to bring dex 3 or higher up to HFM spec and can be used in these apps.
