Dylo, No, that doesn't sound like the thermostat (i'm no expert though)the thermostat stops the water from entering the top pipe, thus circulating in the system. If the thermostat is stuck then the top hose would be cold and the bottom is hot.
My thermostst seems to be ok now, after runnning a bit it opens and the radiator flows but it still isn't leaving the open loop mode, ie the revs aren't dropping. I think perhaps the temp sensors may be failing, how to check them?
The engine runs with high revs when cold, then, when the thermostat opens, the revs speed up slightly and then drop back, revs up then drops back, all on it's own. It's like pressing the throttle a bit then letting it off, it just keeps doing this.
