as long as you walk in remembering that they're *based* on the books, not following them word for word, they're actually bloody good.
for example, the whole sam/bill thing would have seemed crappy and soppy, so they limited that to a "goodbye bill". equally, when they kill the cave troll instead of "wizard locking" the door behind them, that adds a bit of action (which turned out as a VERY cool scene).

True. Translations to screen always require a bit of tweaking of the story and I don't mind that. It's just things that they change like anything to do with Arwen, and how Faramir tries to take the ring (totally against Faramir's character) where I get annoyed.
It was a bit sad that they cut out Tom Bombadil. I can understand why, but he is such an intriguing character. He's actually the most powerful resident of Middle Earth. The only character more powerful than him that makes an appearance in LOTR is Throndor (the eagle that saves Gandalf from Saruman's tower).
I always feel sad when people just stop at LOTR and don't continue on and read the Histories. The stories are so much better, even Aragorn's life story is more exciting.
Did you know that Aragorn was the highest advisor to the current Stewart's father? And that he was willing to turn the kingdom over to Aragorn even though he didn't know the truth about Aragorn?
And that Aragorn is related to Elrond and Arwen? Elrond's brother was Aragorn's great, great, great, great, great (etc) grandfather who chose to be human instead of Elven (Elrond and his brother are half elven). He took one of the Silmarils back to the Valar and for that, they gave his descendants the island of Numenor. And now the only descendants of Numenor are the so called Rangers that Tolkein eludes to...
I could go on all day. But I think I'll stop there....
There's a whole world waiting to be unleashed to anyone willing to sit down and read the Histories.
The story of Beren and Luthien (who's names Tolkein has on his grave).
The absolutely tragic tales of the houses of Huor and Hurin.
Feanor and the Silmarils. And the curse that fell on his sons.

Yeah, the Death Gate cycle was good. Been a LONG time since I read any of the Weis/Hickman stuff.
