Well I might as well start the ball rolling here! IMHO it depends on which vehicle you wish to fit the engine to. Basic design differences between the engines will allow the 1G-GTE to develop torque earlier than the 3S-GTE. The 3S-GTE probably has the greatest potential for mods, just on availability of hot bits, cause they have been used extensively in Rally (Neil Bates), and Circuit racing (TOM's Supra).
