if the motor is in good condition, i reckon use a decent synthetic. i use mobil 1 in my 4K and it makes a big difference, especially when cold (as it has pretty stable viscosity with temp). if you are having trouble holding oil presure, maybe a thicker oil is needed?
dipstick and oil pressure gauge read two totally different things. dipstick tells you how much oil is in the sump, and the level is arbitrarily chosen by the manufacturer so that you can lose a bit and still be ok if you stay within the marks.
oil pressure gauge tells you what pressure the oil is as it moves around the motor... this is the reason you have oil in the sump.. to maintain oil pressure.
if you are concerned about the gauge, go and get a new one. VDO if you have the cash (there are some for $45 on ebay regularly), or Pricol is a bit cheaper (like $30 odd a gauge + more for sender). if you are ever going to buy one aftermarket gauge, oil pressure should be it you lose oil pressure, you lose the motor.
idle prob?? no idea, maybe vacuum leak?? check manifold gaskets and vacuum lines
