i thought that AFM's just have a switch for idle and it doesn't actually deflect? (not much air going in)
varying idle speed can often be an air leak, either from cracked pipes, vacuum lines, or from manifold gaskets... check your spark plugs, if one cylinder looks lean, ti could be a manifold leak (i had this recently.. 2 leaks, 0.5mm by 10mm where manifold gasket got blown out)
