i'd seriously think about getting a seperate gauge, even if just to check what is going on..... you can get pretty cheap remote sensor ones... even VDO on ebay for $45 + 10 for sensor i think... Pricols are even cheaper and almost as good... when you start mixing and matching sender/gauge, hard to tell what going on..
also if there is any crud on the sender surface insulating it from the temp, or crud on the threads (since it gorunds thru the thread to the block), it may have probs... might be worth pulling the sesnor out, cleaning it and the hole, and whacking it back in....
has to be a bad earth LOL
