OR... is your fluid level in the engine OK? if the sensor sees steam, it will climb off the gauge.
Steaming sensor will also leave coating of corrosion/crap on sensor and will affect temp readings.
whats fluid level level like in radiator?
can you take sensor out and put business in a cup (one of insulated coffee mugs) of fresh boiling water and see if gauge reads around the normal mark?
if you're really worried, drive very sedately and rotate radiator cap so it's loose (holds no pressure, stops water splashing everywhere, keeps temp to about 100C) until you get a new sensor (or pinch one from the wreckers).
