my mums AE82 has a carby 4AC with elec dizzy. the igniter is on the side of the dizzy. when they die, the car can randomly stall or be hard to start, usually when hot but also when cold. eventually it won't start at all...

replaced module, all good. picked up a reco'd elec dizzy from wreckers in campbelltown for $70 Very Happy

oh, in her old dizzy, the advance weight posts were so worn, the weights were hitting the dizzy housing! timing was all over the place..

the farting could be varying timing, try putting a light on it and seeing if it moves around a lot.

could also be coil going... occasionally missing sparks etc...

if you get a dizzy from the wreckers, check that the advance weights are ok (wiggle the rotor??), look for one with strong reluctor (old ones you can't really feel when you spin them, roco'd/new ones, you can feel the magnetic force as the metal bits pass each other...)
good luck.
Cya, Stewart
