thicker is popular with the V8 brigade cos they get "cross-fire" but that is usually cos they don't space the leads  duhhhh..
what matters is the clearance to surrounding metal objects, what you use to support the leads (non-metal), and lastly, what material is used for the conductor. considering most leads have a few thousand ohms resistance, and even then that resistance is very low compared to a 1mm air gap, pretty much anything conductive will work...
unless you are having leakage problems, why go to thicker insulation?
