If you've only got 1 in there then it might have only 1.5V instead of the 3 it needs, but again I'm guessing. If it only fits 1 battery, try cleaning the contacts(light sratch with a screwdriver or scourer to get off any corrosion or residue). Possibly the button in the remote is dead.
