Exhaust Smell in Air Vents

Hey, I've noticed recently that when i have air flowing through my vents in my 1990 Celica (not necissarily air con, could be heating, and weather it's fresh from outside, or recirculated) that i get this bad engine/burning smell sorta like exhaust fumes. It's not really bad, but it makes it really hard to pick up chicks, and means that i don't use air con anymore.
Does anybody know what the problem could be, or anything I could do to try and fix it, rather than taking it to a mechanic because i don't have the money at the moment.
Thanks
