Is the head still on the car?
If the head is off of the car, you can put a rag under the valves,(ie combustion chamber) Get a 5/8 spark plug socket put a magnet inside, put the socket on the upper spring retainer and either a. push on the socket with your hand or b. tap the socket(in line with the direction of movement of the valve) with a hammer.
This way can be very quick.
note: the retainers will occasionally go flying. If this happens, make sure you see where it lands.
note#2: No matter what method you use, please take care not to scratch the inside of the lifter bores. If this happens, the bucket may stick in the down position, causing no compression.
To reassemble, use a socket similar but with a big window cut in the side(s) of it. If you have a helper to push while you fit the keepers, you will be less frustrated.
A socket with 'no windows' is used in the first part to reduce flying keepers.
