also helps to have half an idea what ratio it 'might' be too.
for example, with my diffs, they are either 4.111, 4.222 or 4.444, which means that they are all in 9ths. ie, the pinion has 9 teeth 
for example, my 4.222 that someone posted to me today (YAYYY) has 9 pinion teeth and 38 crownwheel teeth.
so for one wheel revolution, the driveshaft turns 4.222 times. what i would do is to turn the wheels 9 times. which means the driveshaft will turn 38 times (see how this works??)
or it might have been 37, or 39 depending on ratio...
if you are buying a diff out of a car, always count teeth (even put a spot on every 5th too th to make it easier to count)
