I'm not so much interested in the type of oil used, but more the regularity with which it is changed. I change the oil every 5000Kms in my daily driver, and due to this fact I only use Shell Helix 20w50 ($14 for 5 litres so it's a good economical alternative). while some of you may say, this is basic oil and not worth using, the fact remains it is still brewed to an Australian standard as are all other oils in the market place.
The fact it is changed twice as regularly as normal service intervals, helps to keep the engine free of contaminants, and protects the bearings better. I'm sure we've all pulled a motor apart that has missed oil changes to find the bearings and adjoining surfaces scored with carbon deposits.
In my Celica with 3TGTE, I'm currently using Penrite HPR Turbo (think they call it HPR 40 now?), and this is changed more often, as it works harder than the daily driver. I'd estimate the oil only does around 2000Km before it's changed.
Having said all that, the next performance motor I'll build will be given a straight diet of Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I plan to pay particular attention to bearing clearances, and want a better than mineral oil protection. Again, this will be a low Km/year engine, so the cost of the oil is offset by this fact.
I have had some bad experiences using the Pennzoil brand of products, and while I can't attribute their problems in association with the oil, I'm not willing to take the chance again - diff rebuilds can become tedious!

I'd propose an oil pressure that drops down to 0psi after a hard run, needs definate attention to the oiling system, both in the type of oil used, the oil return galleries, and the oil temperature.
