Clearly the burette is the gold standard and at around $50, a bloody good deal.

Most 50 ml syringes have 1ml graduations, but some have 0.5 ml markings (I use these if I can find them). The manufacturers will also tell you what the volume of a drop is if you ask them (so if you were pedantic enough you could actually do a drop by drop volume). Definitely not as accurate as a burette, and if you are using oil then the plastic and rubber degenerates (quite rapidly) such that the syringe is quite stiff and difficult to metre out the volume on subsequent measurements. Not an issue for those of us that can get them easily for free. It raises eyebrows amongst the staff here - I don't think they believe me when I say I need them to cc an engine! Laughing
