most likely is that you didnt notice all the oil sitting around the spark plugs BEFORE you pulled them out.... was the plug socket also covered in oil?
its pretty common for the cam cover seals to leak and the galleries fill up with oil. Replace the seals and see if that fixes the problem.Generally you will not see liquid oil in a chamber unless the engine wont run at all unless for the above reasons.
make sure you get all the oil out by cranking without the plugs in, MAKE SURE NO ONE LOOKS IN TO THE CYLINDERS WHILST CRANKING OR IT MAY RESULT IN LOOSING AN EYE!!!, place some absorbant material into eack gallery to soak up the oil as it shoots out.Best to disconnect the lead from the coil while you do this.
If it turns out that this isnt the problem then youll most likely find the head and/or pistons and rings need to be rebuilt
