Contrary to some of what's been said so far, cages are a good idea.
if you go a proper weld-in design, you'll increase the body rigidity of the vehicle as well, something the AE86 can definitely use. talk to your local authorities about what is legal in your area, and then decide if you want one in your street car.
in NSW,you have to sacrifice quite a bit to run a cage-the car has to be re-registered as a two seater, any parts of the cage that surround the occupants have to be a set distance away when you're in the seat(to prevent coming into contact with the cage in an accident),and padded. permanent side intrusion bars are not permitted any longer.
if you're going to go for a cage, you'd want to already have a pair of good seats, and be using harnesses. besides keeping you in place if you have a problem, you can drive a car considerably harder when you're held in properly.
bond roll bars would be a good place to start. failing that, ask around the rally boy traps for who knows what they're doing in this area.
