Check the front brake pads for uneven wear and replace them if they look even the slightest bit dodgy. Second, your rotors could be grooved from uneven wear so check them and get them skimmed if that have some lines in them big enough to catch your g/f's fingernail.
But most of all, get it fixed ASAP, its no condition for someone you care about to be driving around with!
