Hey Tank, I have a 253 in my 4x4 hilux. I didnt do the conversion but i know it doesnt need an engineers cert. here in NSW. on the other hand my Land lord's mate has a 2wd one with a 1jz I think a 1g-gte would be the best replace ment esp if yours originally had a 18R, just look at the celica conversions. If you dont want to go turbo most of the holden V8's bolt in pretty easy, you have 2 options for fitment. put new engine mounts on the chassis, or make adapter plates for the block. Mine has the later. The most common engine swap in the 4x4 world for these things now is the holden V6, more power and torque than the V8, and uses less fuel.
If your looking to have a 2wd street ute, go for the 1g.
