Mk2's are pretty i must admit - ill probably buy my dads immaculate one when he decides to part with it ..
Old school wise - your best bet would have to be the RA series - simply cause they are slightly easier to find parts for - have better brakes , have extra space for larger engine clearance - and have a better gearbox stock for something like a 18RG conversion
ta22 IMHO look alot smoother but parts these days are getting awfully haed to find - like straight bumpers , and bonnets ..
They have a letdown in the front brakes dept - and need a lot more work to swap to larger rotors - whereas an RA strut can take a supra vented disc and caliper with minor modifications to the plate the caliper bolts to ( see norbies site again ) They also can take a 11 inch commodore rotor i believe without mods to the hub but im not 100% sure .. an afternoons work compared to multiple hundreds of dollars in parts , labour and fiddleing with.
for 6 grand you could buy something similar to teenz's new car with an 18rg - straight , minimal bodywork necessary and have the start to a real good modifications platform that not only looks cool - its cheap to work on as well
My starting point advice - with you being a P Plater would be a RA23/28 , 18rg conversion already done + most likely mags/minor suspension/exhaust work ( estimate of $3500 price - $4000 for a clean example ) then spend your extra $$ that you may have on a decent set of front seats ( honda prelude buckets are my choice - 250 bux to buy from a jap importers and minimal fuss to install - ask me about it as i have done it ) A nice CD player would be a go - and some nice speakers , a DECENT security system ( ie immobiliser, central locking, remote key twipper thing ) and then build on that - QUICK run down on cost estimates
Car: $3500 approx Seats : $350 installed and engineer approved Stereo $1000 ( cd player , front splits + rears ) Security :350
Grand total $5100
that leaves you 900 approx to play with for rego/insurance out of 6 grand - providing you do your own seat install and stereo install - get security fitted professionally
Sorry about the rant - though i hope it helps
