i think he means cut the shifter bit in the car down by 100mm, not moving the pivot ball up 100mm...

Of course that's what he meant. I just said it's a bad idea... unless you want to put your shoulder out every time you try to change gears. Take it from someone who's done it (the stick, not the shoulder). I cut off the top of a shaft just under the thread, it made it only just possible to get into gear. You can do this method if you want, but make damn sure you have a spare stick handy. In reality, it's a waste of a stick.
A coupl eof other things:
oldcorollas is right, I hope you have long arms.
The 92 shifter is angled back and right towards the driver, so making it shorter will make it closer to the drivers seat.

Really, there's little you can do with AE92 shifters. You're better off getting housings and shafts from AE101 and later.

Method 1: cut Xmm off/out from above the ball.
Method 2: cut Xmm off/out from above the ball and ADD Xmm to below the ball OR move the ball Xmm up the shaft.

Method 1: If you cut 100mm off the top of the shaft (about a 1/3 of the length of the shaft), you'll reduce the throw by about 1/3, but you'll ALSO increse the amount of torque required to shift by a 1/3.

If you move the ball Xmm (Method 2), you'll reduce the throw by twice the distance you'd get by Method 1. The extra torque required to shift will be somewhere between 0 and 1/2 that of Method 1.

Most people prefer moving the ball because it's safer.
