1978-1980 was the RA40.... like this:
1981-1983 was the RA60.... like this:
1983-1984 was the RA65 and the SA63.... they looked like the ra60, but with popup headlights and different tailights...:
1985-1988 was the ST162..... like this:
i dont really know a lot about the ra40s.... they had a 2 litre 4 cylinder, the 18R-C, 0-100 in around 12 i think.
ive got an RA60 for sale in the for sale section, its a 2 litre 5 speed manual.... so maybe you could have a look there, lots of specs n stuff.
the ra65 was a 2.4 EFi car, with IRS and a few minor changes. the sa63 was the same except with a 2 litre 2S-C carburretted engine. my mate has an sa63 and has battered the shit out of it, and it still runs really well, quicker than an RA60, and handles better too....
all these celicas were rear wheel drive.
the ST162 was front wheel drive but had the 3S-GE engine in them, a sports-angled twin cam. they went fairly hard, around 100kw at the flywheel (i think?) and 0-100 in about 8.6 or something....
from my experience the celica outhandles and outbreaks a lot of other cars on the road from its era... and even later model family barges. they arent very fast, but hey, they look a lot better than something like a cordia or exa, in my opinion.
things to watch out for- rust, in the hatches especially, perhaps a buggered radiator, in the st162s, the synchros from 2nd to 3rd go silly easily....
i dunno, i hope someone else steps in and gives a bit more tech advice...
if you state a model you like i can probably help you out more...
