As far as I'm aware, a larger diff pretty much always corresponds with a stronger hemisphere and more splines (I'm talking Toyota diffs here). The 8" G series diff is definitely stronger than the 7.5" F series, and it remains popular with the rotary boys for its relatively compact strength.
