... and pinch a one-way valve (many are inline items) from the vacuum line from a functioning booster unit off something at the wreckers.

This will help isolate the induction system from faulty/leaking booster - and possibly replace what could be a faulty one-way valve on your car.

or is this something totally simple at mechanical like the brake pedal mechanism acting on the throttle cable somehow? does the throttle move at all when you pump the brake pedal?
