Don't mess around, just buy a brake bleeding kit. It is the only way to do the job solo and costs bugger all. I paid NZ$20 for mine, it is just a plastic hose that clamps to the bleed nipple and feeds into a little bottle, with a ball bearing in the end of the hose to create a one way valve. Couldn't be simpler or less messy, except of course for paying someone else to do it which I was quoted NZ$40 for full replacement of brake fluid.
